There is a saying: "Rules are made to be broken." Can you think of a situation for which this applies? (It can be from real life or in a book.) When is it OK to break the rules?
I want some lemons too! But yes, they are meant to be broken! Almost every rule has been broken! Humans can't be perfect so why try? If the only way to succeed is to break a few rules, Well gosh dang We gotta do it!
The saying "Rules are made to be broken" applied during the Civil Rights movement. For example, rules such as blacks not being able to sit in the front of the bus was a rule, in my opinion, that was made to be broken. Rosa Parks was the one who decided to break that rule. I think she made a good decision because that started the movement where blacks gained their rights.
Yeah, i agree with that. There are some cases where rules are meant to be broken. Sometimes there is a terrible law or rule that turns out to be terrible for everyone. So you have to break it!
Civil disobedience should be used when breaking a small law for a greater purpose. During the Civil Rights movement, African Americans and their supporters broke many minor laws, but achieved a greater purpose through perseverance and determination. They broke laws, but it was done peacefully and non-violently. They had no intentions of getting anyone hurt.
During the civil rights movement there was civil disobedience. The blacks and some whites would break small rules to make a difference. This was OK because they were standing up for what they believed in and were not harming anyone in the process. They were not committing awful crimes that would effect others.
Well, if you think about it, if people wanted a an act done, they wouldn't make a rule against it, right? If rules were made to be broken, why make them in the first place? I disagree with this, unless civil disobedience is involved.
I see where you're coming from. Breaking rules should only be done with a noble cause. If not, then you're just doing something that people were trying to prevent.
I don't remember exactly what was said, but in the Percy Jackson books Hermes said that if you break a rule but somehow are able to do something great to aide the creator of the rule, you will often be pardened
It is true. One individual can change anything. Even the smallest things can make a huge difference. A native African saying is "If you think you're too small to make a difference, try sleeping in a closed room with a mosquito." Even the smallest things can leave the biggest trail of difference. Be careful what your actions are and what you wish for. Sometimes, things aren't meant to be change. Most of the time though, things change for the better.
TRUE THAT!
ReplyDeleteWhen rules are completely unjust, some people break them to show their disagreement.
ReplyDeleteYep!

DeleteAs Mr. Bell was saying, with civil disobedience (doing something illegal for a greater good).

ReplyDeleteIf you break a smaller law for a bigger, better reason, some may give sympathy to that. Only if it is for a good reason.
ReplyDeleteon my history test, i said that the blacks marched without a permit, breaking the law, but they achieved their voting rights.
ReplyDelete(didn't finish) by breaking the law, the achieved a greater purpose.

ReplyDeleteDuring the Civil Rights Movement the Blacks broke laws, some being small, but they did it so they could gain freedom.
ReplyDeleteAnd it was right for them to break the laws to gain their freedom!
DeleteYes rules are meant to be broken, that is how growth and learning happens. If no one breaks rules, we wont be able to improve on our lives

ReplyDeleteWell, let me rephrase that. The creators of the rules do not wish for those rules to be broken.
DeleteI see where you're coming from. Breaking rules should only be done with a noble cause. If not, then you're just doing something that people were trying to prevent.
DeleteSo the question "should rules be broken" is very different from "were rules *made* to be broken.
